International Day of Zero Waste

Seeing the Value in What We Leave Behind: Reflections on Zero Waste Day

Today, as we mark the International Day of Zero Waste, we find ourselves reflecting deeply on the journey we’ve taken at Consuming Carbon Corporation. This year’s global UN theme focuses on the critical issue of food waste—a stark reminder that what we throw away has a profound impact on our climate, our food security, and our future. Treating waste as an opportunity rather than a burden is a philosophy that sits at the very heart of everything we do.

When we look at a pile of discarded organic material or scattered plastics, we don’t see trash. We see energy. We see healthier soil. We see transformed communities. That shift in perspective is what drives our waste-to-value initiatives across every county we operate in.

From the very beginning, our mission has been hands-on. In Busia County, through the Pamoja Project, we are turning local organic waste into powerful hybrid sequestration solutions. Down in Kiambu County with Hygrow Organic Fields, and out in Wamunyu, Machakos County, we are seeing firsthand how converting agricultural byproducts into biochar not only sequesters carbon but breathes life back into the local soil through regenerative agriculture.

But organic matter is only part of the equation. The plastic pollution crisis is visible across the regions we work in, threatening our landscapes and waterways. This is where the Silverlink Project comes in. By actively turning waste plastic into value, we are integrating plastic recovery and upcycling into our broader framework, fighting to close the loop on the materials that are the hardest to eliminate.

None of this work is easy, but it is incredibly rewarding. Every ton of waste we divert from a landfill or an open fire is a step toward a circular economy and climate resilience. Most importantly, it’s a step toward empowering the local communities that host and drive these projects.

Transforming our relationship with waste requires all of us—businesses, governments, and individuals—to fundamentally rethink what we discard.

Our challenge to you today: Take a hard look at your own waste footprint. What is one “waste” stream in your home or your business that you can turn into value this week?

Drop a comment below with your thoughts or visit our website to explore how we can partner to build a true zero-waste future. Let’s clean up our communities, one project at a time.
