SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (cooperative farmer model)
The Wamunyu Biochar Project is a targeted soil carbon and agriculture initiative supporting over 2,000 farmers within the Farmers Care Cooperative. By converting problematic agricultural residues (such as maize cobs and sunflower husks) into biochar-enriched organic fertilizer using low-emission Taka Char kilns, the project turns agricultural waste into wealth.
This highly traceable process enhances soil fertility in semi-arid regions, significantly improves water retention, boosts crop yields, and ensures long-term food security.
Project Overview & Impact
- Location: Machakos County, Kenya.
- Key Impact: Boosts soil health and crop yields in drought-prone areas, creating a circular economy that directly supports food security and smallholder resilience.
- Scale: Processing 1,162 tonnes of feedstock per year to yield 202 tonnes of biochar.
Project Status & Carbon Credits
- Status: Feasibility phase; pre-feasibility report complete (including feedstock analysis and financial projections); EIAs ongoing. Pilot kiln installation is currently planned at the cooperative milling site.
- Carbon Credits: Selected for NASDAQ's institutional-grade registry for high-integrity Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR). Total net generation of ~673 tCO₂e/year.
- Biochar Removals (VM0044): ~557 gross tCO₂e/year.
- Methane Avoidance (AMS-III.F): ~211 tCO₂e/year.
