On 21 September, our team took the train from Charlottesville to New York for Climate Week. We came home three days later with full notebooks and one word we kept hearing in every room: interoperability. It is a big word for a simple idea. Data should be able to move from one system to another and still be trusted on the other side.
We spent the week with carbon standards, certification bodies, project raters, buyers and other project developers. Different organisations, same message: the future belongs to data that connects.
What we heard
Three things stood out. First, in conversation after conversation we heard that there are very few DMRV tools that can scale, in Africa or in US reforestation. DMRV is how a project measures, reports and verifies its carbon, digitally. That is the gap Pamoja was built for.
Second, new European rules on deforestation will soon ask companies to prove where their coffee, cocoa, timber and other goods came from, down to the farm plot. Pamoja already captures that.
Third, the panels kept coming back to long-term buying agreements, where a company commits to buy credits for years. Nobody signs for years unless the data behind it holds up.
