Carbon Markets 101 – Part 3: How Are Carbon Credits Verified?
Welcome back to our weekly series where we simplify the world of carbon markets and share insights from our bamboo-based agroforestry journey in Kenya.
So far, we’ve looked at what carbon credits are and who buys them.
“This week, let’s demystify how these credits are actually verified”
FAQ #6: What Does Verification Mean?
Verification is the process that confirms a project is actually removing or reducing carbon as claimed — and that the benefits are measurable, additional, and permanent.
FAQ #7: Who Does the Verification?
Independent, accredited third-party organizations audit the data using global standards (like Verra, Gold Standard, etc.).
This includes on-site inspections, satellite monitoring, and performance tracking over time.
Why It Matters
Without rigorous verification, carbon markets wouldn’t be trusted. For local farmers and climate investors, verification means transparency, credibility, and ultimately — value.
